![]() The eulogy, it turns out, was for the player. This prompted Saint-14, another prominent NPC from the Season of Dawn, to deliver a ghostly, earnest, disembodied voice-over. This time, players could approach and interact with the coffin. The final sequence of rooms led players once again to the Timelost Vault. With nearly six days to speculate, the hype rose with every passing hour, and with it, so too did player expectations. Theories ranged from returning weapons from Destiny 1 to the very sword entombed with the mysterious dead guardian to entirely new chapters of game content. Since that the overwhelming majority of players could not truthfully participate in data collation, most spent their time theorizing about the sarcophagus’s significance and with what players will be rewarded in the end. Surely, such an extraordinary puzzle would reward players with a commensurate prize? THE REWARD It took nearly six days to finish the 5,000+ piece jigsaw puzzle and reveal the map. Given that the community figured out exactly what had to be done fairly early on, the real enemy was, appropriately enough, time. Streamers like Gladd and Sweatcicle, among many others, pushed their bodies to the limit, staying on air for entire days at a time. Within days, players developed online tools for uploading and translating images of their “emblem room” puzzle pieces. The main difficulty was collating thousands of players’ data points. Already a common language developed for the symbols, as happens with most Destiny content. The most proactive members of the community and Twitch streamers with thousands of fans took on the mantles of organizers and spreadsheet masters. ![]() Within hours, the Destiny 2 community sprung into action. It was with these pieces that the real community puzzle solving effort began. This “emblem room” also contained a similar looking puzzle piece in the pool’s reflection, although these pieces were unique(ish) for every player (and each character, for that matter) and changed every hour. ![]() Finally, with all nineteen pieces, the community built another map and another path, following which rewards players with an emblem, a piece of flair visible in multiplayer lobbies. Doing so revealed another puzzle piece and a new piece of lore for each of the nineteen codes. While players couldn’t approach the tomb lest they get teleported back to the maze’s starting room, they could interact with the glassy pool surrounding it. This austere room contained a tomb, on top of which was a sword and a ghost, and at the base was a plaque containing the symbol for Guardians, the class of protectors that serve as players’ avatars in the game. Running the hourly sequences found on the obelisks led players to a room called the Timelost Vault. They discovered that these symbols functioned as rudimentary maps-and paths-that corresponded to the Corridors of Time. Players on the subreddit r/RaidSecrets discovered that the same symbols also appeared on the game’s “obelisks,” new world objects that heavily feature in this season’s content. Players were then spawned into the maze without any more information, only to discover that the walls of any given hexagonal room were marked by strange symbols. This quest had a simple brief: explore the Corridors of Time-a maze-like network of rooms that briefly appeared in earlier Season of Dawn missions. On January 14th, players discovered that Osiris, one of Destiny 2’s non-playable characters heavily featured in the ongoing Season of Dawn, offered a secret quest (secret, that is, because there was no announcement to players nor waypoint indicating its appearance). ![]() While the series is no stranger to community-driven events like worldwide races for teams to become the world's-first conquerors of new raids-one of which took nearly 20 hours to finish-or the infamous Niobe Labs puzzle, which took over 80 hours for the community to solve, Bungie’s latest puzzle sets a new bar for the series and the gaming community as a whole. With Destiny and Destiny 2, Bungie, the veteran game developers behind the iconic Halo series, have taken their affinity for in-game secrets and puzzles to an unprecedented level.
